The latest advance for gun violence prevention: Todd Jones’s confirmation as ATF Director

Yesterday the U.S. Senate voted 53-42 to confirm Todd Jones as the permanent director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Following a bipartisan cloture vote, Jones was confirmed.

It’s been seven years since the ATF had the permanent leadership it needs to effectively help protect our communities from gun violence. This is a victory for gun violence prevention advocates and supporters of common-sense gun reform.

Here’s what President Obama had to say about the confirmation:

“Todd’s confirmation will help ATF apply the tools it needs to protect our communities from dangerous criminals and reduce gun violence… I will continue to stand with the majority of Americans who support common-sense reforms to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of criminals. And I will continue to do everything in my power to keep our children and our communities safe.”

This fight isn’t over. OFA volunteers are working across the country to keep up the momentum and let lawmakers know that when it comes to protecting our communities, there will be no backing down.

A send-off to remember for Congress

Before members of Congress made their way back to Washington after the August recess, OFA supporters made sure they had a send-off to remember. Volunteers brought Action August to a close by reminding their representatives to stand with the American Dream and their constituents in support of immigration reform.

In Kingston, New York, OFA members brought Congressman Chris Gibson 11 reasons to support the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in uncertainty.

Advocates for comprehensive immigration reform rallied at Congressman Scott Rigell’s office in Virginia.

OFA Texas volunteers got their friends and neighbors fired up and honking for immigration reform.

Congressman Kevin McCarthy heard from OFA California supporters who asked him to stand with the American Dream.

Action August is over, but OFA supporters are still organizing for comprehensive immigration reform in their communities. Join them today and add your voice to the growing movement for reform.

Speaking truth to power about Obamacare

During the August congressional recess, lawmakers are in their home districts to speak to constituents face-to-face. Many are holding town halls, where people can make their voices heard on the issues that matter to them. And there’s one law in particular representatives are hearing a lot about, especially if they’ve voted to repeal it on 40 separate occasions: Obamacare.

At several town halls all over the country, constituents who have seen for themselves that the law is working have been fact-checking their elected representatives’ claims and calling them out over their votes to take Obamacare away.

North Carolina Congressman Patrick McHenry and Florida Congressman Daniel Webster both got called out in front of dozens of people at town halls in their districts. Representatives McHenry and Webster both voted to repeal Obamacare, and they have vocal constituents who don’t agree with their stance on the law.

In Nevada, a small businessman took a stand against Congressman Joe Heck’s efforts to repeal Obamacare. Ron Nelsen asked his representative why he is trying to take away the positive contributions Obamacare will make to his family’s and his employees’ health care.

Finally, in Pennsylvania, Representative Dent was confronted by constituents who challenged his misleading claims about rising health care costs.

This is a big deal. One by one, lawmakers are seeing that their votes for repeal aren’t just about political posturing—they’re about taking benefits away from the people in their communities who are benefitting from the law.

Now is the time to make your voice heard, and show your representatives where you stand. Momentum is building as more and more Americans stand up for Obamacare, and call out representatives who are trying to take affordable health care away from millions. Add your voice today.

Taking action for Obamacare

There was not one but two big milestones yesterday: President Obama’s 52nd birthday, and the official kick-off of Action August. For OFA supporters, these two events came together with a nationwide Obamacare day of action.

Organizers went out in their communities to talk about the ways that Americans are benefitting from Obamacare, and to push back on myths and misinformation about the health care law. OFA supporters opened their homes to their neighbors, joined together in town centers, local businesses, and even beaches and parks to set the record straight: Obamacare is providing better coverage and lower costs.

And while they were at it, they enjoyed some presidential birthday cake.

Check out some of the action from OFA volunteers yesterday:

Sunday’s events were just the beginning of the grassroots campaign to arm people with the facts, answer questions, and counter what is already a multimillion-dollar effort to spread misinformation and undermine Obamacare. OFA supporters know that there is no better way to get the word out than through grassroots organizing and neighbor to neighbor conversations.

Yesterday was also just the beginning for Action August. If you feel strongly about Obamacare, immigration reform, climate change or other major challenges facing our country, get involved today and make your voice heard during the congressional recess.

Setting the facts straight on Obamacare

In honor of President Obama’s 52nd birthday today, Organizing for Action volunteers across the country are coming together to celebrate in a unique way: spreading the truth about Obamacare. What better way to celebrate the President’s birthday than by getting together and talking about how we can protect one of our proudest accomplishments?

Americans deserves health care that fits their budget and is there when they need it. Obamacare helps them achieve that—and today, we’re making sure people know what it has to offer.

Obamacare fights for better coverage at lower costs to the patient, and ensures patients can receive preventive care services, like vaccinations, mammograms, cancer screenings, annual checkups, blood pressure and cholesterol tests at no cost. More than 70 million Americans have already received free preventive care.

That’s just one example of how Obamacare is working, and today, OFA volunteers are helping spread the word about all the benefits of Obamacare by sharing information and getting the facts out there in their local neighborhoods.

Obamacare has done so much good, yet a lot of Americans are unaware of its benefits. Even worse, opponents are spending millions of dollars trying to convince Americans that Obamacare isn’t working, and they don’t care if they have to lie or mislead to do it. Those opponents might have plenty of money—but we have the facts on our side. It’s up to us to make sure our friends and neighbors know the truth.

Today’s efforts are just the start of a national, month-long series of grassroots events called Action August . You can still be involved in this fight.

40 ways Obamacare is working

Tomorrow the House of Representatives is poised to take its 40th vote to repeal Obamacare. To mark the occasion, here’s a quick rundown of 40 ways that Obamacare is already working for millions of Americans and will impact more beginning in 2014.

1. Say goodbye to lifetime limits: Insurance companies will no longer be able to place an arbitrary cap on coverage.

2. Children can no longer be denied health insurance because of a pre-existing condition.

3. Starting in 2014, adults will no longer be denied health insurance because of a pre-existing condition.

Free preventive care, including:

4. Annual check-ups

5. Contraception

6. Vaccinations

7. Gestational diabetes screenings

8. Mammograms

9. Screening and counselling for HIV

10. Cholesterol screenings

11. Colonoscopies

12. Blood pressure screenings

13. Cancer screenings

14. Osteoporosis screenings

15. Young adults can stay on their parents’ insurance plans until the age of 26.

16. If insurance companies aren’t spending your premium dollars on your health care—at least 80 percent—they’ve got to give you some money back.

17. Insurance companies can’t raise your rates by double-digits without justification.

18. Insurance plans can’t require higher co-payments or co-insurance if you get emergency care from an out-of-network hospital.

19. Women will no longer be charged more than men just because they’re women.

20. The health insurance marketplace will be ready to go in every state starting October 1 of this year.

21. No-hassle comparisons: The online marketplace provides easy access to information on all available plans, so you can do a side-by-side comparison and find a plan that works for you.

22. Many Americans will be eligible for financial assistance to help them buy health insurance on their own, so you can afford a plan that will be there if you get sick.

23. When you buy insurance through the marketplace, premiums can be determined based only on these four factors: where you live, how old your are, how large your family is, and whether or not you are a smoker.

24. In the marketplace, you can choose a plan that matches your budget and needs: Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze.

25. By 2020, the Medicare prescriptions drug “donut hole” will be closed for good.

These are the essential benefits that all health plans in the marketplace must cover:

26. Ambulatory patient services

27. Emergency services

28. Hospitalization

29. Prenatal care

30. Neonatal care

31. Mental health services

32. Prescription drugs

33. Rehabilitative services and devices

34. Laboratory services like bloodwork

35. Preventive care

36. Wellness services

37. Chronic disease management

38. Pediatric services, including oral and vision care

39. Lower prescription drug costs for people on Medicare.

40. These states are already foreseeing dramatic drops in premiums: New York, California, Nevada, Connecticut, Oregon.

There you have it. 40 ways Obamacare is helping and will help Americans—benefits the House of Representatives is about to try to take away for the 40th time.

If you’re sick and tired of repeal votes, add your name to stand up to the people trying to tear down Obamacare.
