Fourth of July 2019: Celebrating foreign-born stars who became American citizens

The Fourth of July is a great opportunity to celebrate not only born-and-raised Americans, but those who made the choice to officially join the U.S. of A. And among those many people are a collection of famous faces, from Nicole Kidman to Wolfgang Puck.

While some celebrities opted to gain citizenship for work purposes, others had more meaningful reasons for the process, which can often be lengthy and complicated. Ireland-born Liam Neeson revealed in 2009 that the outpouring of public support after the death of his wife, actress Natasha Richardson, motivated him to obtain U.S. citizenship: “America’s been very, very good to me,” he said.

Salma Hayek was, for a period of time, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, while late “I Love Lucy” actor Desi Arnaz arrived in Florida as his family fled turmoil in Cuba decades back. See more stars who became American citizens in the gallery below.
