VANCOUVER, Jan. 7, 2016 /CNW/ – Destiny Media Technologies, Inc. (TSXV: DSY) (OTCQX: DSNY), today announced the successful migration of its Play MPE® system to a cloud computing platform.
Previously, the system was hosted at five server facilities (three in North America, one in Europe and one in Australia), which provided real time load balancing, mirroring of data, intrusion detection and failure recovery. This process required Destiny staff to manage multiple physical servers and operating systems at each location and to deal with remote hardware equipment maintenance. A large investment in infrastructure was required on an ongoing basis as storage arrays and servers were regularly replaced. Scalability was limited by physical real estate at the co-location facilities and access to electricity and cooling.
The move required a large up front investment, but going forward, the company expects to phase out four out of five facilities saving approximately 56% on server costs while freeing up staff to work on features.
The new approach increases Destiny’s global server footprint by 1,500% with the ability to scale further in response to market demand. Audio encoding capacity has increased 600%, and global streaming capacity increased 265%, allowing individual watermarks to be embedded faster. Server capacity is virtually unlimited and can respond to market demands.
The system is already highly secure and reliable with patented encryption and watermarking technologies, along with redundancy in case of failure. This move to a global cloud provider layers on additional expertise, providing large improvements in performance, reliability and security.
Darren Martz, Director of Software Development at Destiny Media said that the move to the cloud has been a major focus that much of the team has been working on since May 2015. “This was a significant project with systems dating back to 2004 supporting a Windows encoder and player applications on iOS, Android, Windows, Apple OSX, and Web. Some systems required changes to support the new environment of clustered load balanced micro services. Over 21 terabytes of customer content was moved and we maintained minimal downtime in the transition. The move was completed in December during the industry’s slowest period. I am very proud of my team and the successful conclusion of the move.”
Included with the move, is a new website and an update to the Play MPE® logo. A number of new MPE® products, including a web based encoder and streaming from emails, are expected to launch in the near future. “We expect that the new products should directly improve revenue as they leverage the recent changes to the system,” added Rick Ramsay, Director of Product Management at Destiny Media.
