New York City’s Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, today announced the launch of a financial consumer education web app called AGScamHelp. The site lets consumers look up housing counselors and legal services providers in a database to see if they’ve been approved by the federal or state government.

The database contains information about all the mortgage assistance relief services providers in the New York State Attorney General’s Homeowner Protection Program.

“While my office is committed to cracking down on scam operations that target struggling New Yorkers, the most powerful tool against these frauds is to ensure that consumers are informed and aware of the free services that are available to them through our Homeowner Protection Program,” Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement.

A recent report by the Center for New York City Neighborhoods and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law found that more than 2,700 foreclosure scam claims were filed between March 2010 and September 2014.
