Biden asked Whitehouse about seat on Supreme Court

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden says he asked U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island if he was interested in being a possible nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court but that Whitehouse declined.

Biden recalled the story during a fundraiser for Whitehouse in Providence Thursday.

Whitehouse spokesman Seth Larson confirmed the story Friday. He says Biden and President Barack Obama were assembling a shortlist of potential Supreme Court nominees when Biden asked Whitehouse if he’d be interested.

Biden says Whitehouse declined by saying “he had a “commitment to the people of Rhode Island.”

Whitehouse, a Newport Democrat, is an attorney and former Rhode Island Attorney General.

He faces a challenge from Republican Barry Hinckley in this fall’s election.
