Call to keep teens out of clubs

News

A proposal at the Rhode Island State House would keep anyone under 21 out of nightclubs that serve alcohol.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Joy Hearn, D-Barrington, said there are too many problems with teens and violence when the clubs close. She said it’s a safety issue.

Alex Tomasso, a club owner and head of the Providence Nightlife Association, said safety is the priority but plenty of clubs have 18-plus nights without problems.

He said a ban would hurt business. He proposes a three-strikes-and-you’re-out plan for trouble spots.

Hearn’s bill was heard by a House committee Wednesday.
