Several hundred critics of Gov. Lincoln Chafee and a new policy allowing in-state tuition for illegal immigrants at public colleges have rallied at the State House.
Those at the rally included state lawmakers, tea party activists and others. Protesters say they are angry not just about the policy but the way it was approved by an unelected higher education policy board.
Critics said Chafee circumvented the legislative process by urging the Board of Governors for Higher Education to adopt the change. It was approved unanimously last week.
WPRO radio show host John DePetro told the crowd “Chafee, you are not the king of Rhode Island.”
Earlier in the day supporters of the policy brought roses to the State House to thank Chafee for supporting the policy.
