Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is mounting a public relations campaign to build support for his plan to allow struggling municipalities to cut pension benefits to retired workers.
The independent governor released an internet video Friday highlighting his efforts to rescue cities and towns like Woonsocket, Providence and Pawtucket.
Chafee wants to allow cities with critically underfunded retirement plans to suspend cost-of-living pension increases. He also wants to let struggling cities waive certain state mandates to save money.
The proposals are now under consideration in the General Assembly.
The online video includes testimonials from Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.
The end of the ad features the sound of a ticking clock and the words “the clock is ticking for Rhode Island’s cities and towns.”
