EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. —
Republican Congressional candidate Brendan Doherty said Wednesday that U.S. Rep. David Cicilline has a continuous pattern of deception and dishonesty.
Doherty made the remarks at a news conference in East Providence, a day after Cicilline won the Democratic primary in the 1st Congressional District.
Doherty, the former head of the Rhode Island State Police, said he wants the Nov. 6 general election to revolve around integrity, and rolled out a list of instances where he believes Cicilline waffled or spoke mistruths.
“This race is about leadership, and nothing inspires confidence more in a leader than when a leader takes responsibility on his or her watch. And we didn’t see that two years ago from Mayor Cicilline. Instead we saw a continuous pattern of deception and dishonesty,” he said.
Doherty focused less on policy differences between himself and Cicilline and more on their reputations for honesty.
Cicilline in his victory speech on Tuesday night made it clear that his path forward will be about trying to define Doherty as a Republican in the mold of the national ticket of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.
“Doherty has already gone on the record as supporting Medicare reform and even raising the retirement age,” Cicilline said.
Doherty said he’s his own man and won’t be tied to the Romney-Ryan ticket.
