Former RI mayor takes steps to run again

A former Woonsocket mayor has taken the first steps toward running against her successor.

The Woonsocket Call reported that former Mayor Susan Menard filed preliminary declaration papers on Tuesday with the Board of Canvassers.

The 62-year-old Menard told the newspaper she is testing the waters to see if she has enough support to warrant another run for mayor.

The city’s first woman mayor bowed out of local politics in 2009 after her 31-year-old daughter died of an accidental medication interaction. She served a record seven consecutive terms in office.

Incumbent Mayor Leo Fontaine said he’s prepared to run against Menard if she goes forward with the race.
