Former town solicitor checks into NJ prison

A former North Providence town solicitor checked into a federal prison in New Jersey.

A Bureau of Prisons spokesman said Robert Ciresi checked in Tuesday at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fort Dix, N.J. The prison is a low-security facility for male inmates.

Last week, the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston rejected a request by Ciresi to be freed on bail while he appeals his conviction.

Ciresi, 78, was sentenced last month to five years and three months in prison for his role in facilitating bribes for three former North Providence town councilmen.

A jury convicted him in April of conspiracy, bribery and extortion.

Another Rhode Island public official, former Providence Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci Jr., also served a prison sentence for corruption at Fort Dix.
