Former Pawtucket Mayor William Harty Jr., who served in the 1980s, died suddenly Friday, Mayor Donald Grebien said.
Grebien said Harty served 13 years on the City Council before becoming mayor in 1981.
Harty served on the Pawtucket Redevelopment Agency for several years. Grebien said he appointed him to a new five-year term last month.
He also gave his time to the Pawtucket Boys Girls Club, Memorial Hospital, the Pawtucket Rotary Club, the Salvation Army and the Children’s Shelter of Pawtucket.
Grebien said city flags will fly at half-staff until Harty’s burial.
