An environmental activist and political newcomer who’s registered as an independent has jumped into the race to represent Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional District.
The Providence Journal reported that Abel Collins on Wednesday announced his run for the seat held by U.S. Rep. James Langevin.
Collins, who works for the state Sierra Club affiliate, criticized Langevin’s support for Wall Street bank “bailouts” and trade policies he says don’t enforce fair labor practices and environmental protections.
Collins said in a statement he’s become alarmed by how little faith people have in government. He said he wants the “voiceless masses” to be heard.
Langevin has served as a Democrat since 2001. He faces a primary challenge from John Matson.
Two Republicans are also running.
