Lawmakers want to stop odor from coming back

A special legislative commission formed to address unpleasant odors from Rhode Island’s main landfill is meeting to discuss the best ways of managing the problem in the future.

The House panel is scheduled to meet Thursday at the State House to hear presentations from a landfill expert from the National Solid Waste Management Association.

Hundreds of residents complained last year about noxious odors from the Central Landfill in Johnston.

The complaints subsided after the landfill’s operators installed new gas flares and wells to eliminate landfill gas. Lawmakers on the panel say they want to ensure the smells don’t return.
