Melania Trump wore a white sundress and bright pink stilettos for the Fourth of July’s “Salute to America” celebration at the Lincoln Memorial.

In the late afternoon, the first couple appeared at the “Salute to America” event at the Lincoln Memorial — which the president had promised to be “The show of a lifetime” — looking thrilled. The first lady wore a white dress with multi-colored stripes and asymmetrical sleeves, along with fuchsia heels.

“As we gather this evening, in the joy of freedom, we remember that all share a truly extraordinary heritage. Together we are part of one of the greatest stories ever told, the story of America,” President Trump said.

Earlier, the administration kicked off the holiday with a National Independence Day Parade on Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C., and a speech from Vice-President Mike Pence at the National Archives to welcome 44 new U.S. citizens from 24 countries, according to CBS News.

“Salute to America” has been a delicate topic, due to its bells and whistles: military jets, a 21-gun salute, and a fireworks show, and the White House has reportedly refused to share the costs of the ceremony. However, according to CBS News, $2.5M of taxpayer money initially dedicated to the National Park Service, will help pay for the show.

Jackie Kennedy at JFK’s inauguration in 1961 and Melania Trump at Trump’s inauguration in 2017. Many thought the colors of the suits matched, but that is not the case.

Although the blurry picture from the 1961 ceremony seems to show Kennedy in a blue suit, her Oleg Cassini coat is actually beige. Given this misrepresentation, much of the world went on to compare Kennedy’s look with Melania’s chosen inauguration look, a powder blue Ralph Lauren getup.

Kennedy opted for head-to-toe Chanel, including that now iconic white Chanel suit and gloves, for an official visit to San Antonio in 1963. Trump met Queen Elizabeth in a very similar look by Dior, complete with a black high-waisted belt with centered detailing.

The style icon was known to sport a headscarf and sunglasses, a longstanding fashion trend for women in the 1960s and 1970s. Her scarf of choice? The iconic Hermès headscarf, created decades ago for the “newly emancipated, active, athletic woman who, as feminine propriety still dictated, needed to keep her hair in order.”

Melania opted for a Hermès headscarf for her departure from Ireland following an official five-day state visit in the UK. She paired the look with a trench coat and oversized sunglasses, a look that was very nostalgic of some of Kennedy’s most well-known street style looks.

The first lady traveled to Arizona to visit a border patrol center for a trip to immigration facilities, the second since her controversial “I don’t really care, do you?” jacket. For this trip, she opted for casual white palazzo pants and black long-sleeved t-shirt with sneakers, reminiscent of Jackie Kennedy’s beach look in 1968. She later swapped her sneakers for a pair of pointy Christian Louboutin flats.

After marrying Greek shipping heir Onassis, the couple jetted off to Paris where the former FLOTUS took the cosmopolitan streets in a sleek white pantsuit with a pleated leg, paired with a silk cream button down shirt which she tucked in. Melania seemed to draw inspiration from the look for the 2018 State of the Union Address — the outfit drew many comparisons to the suffragette movement.

Kennedy opted for a bright red suit dress to welcome NBC News’ Sander Vanocur to the White House on November 5, 1962 to discuss plans for what is now known as The Kennedy Center. Melania opted for a similarly bold look while visiting Paris in Dior.

The two first ladies opted for pastel yellow to meet with world leaders. Kennedy dressed in a yellow Carolina Herrera outfit, complete with an A-line skirt, pumps and box hat, while Trump opted for a yellow Gucci coat for the occasion.

Melania Trump looked almost identical to the former first lady for a trip to West Palm Beach with the Japanese prime minister. Trump wore matching white wide-leg trousers, a black long-sleeved shirt and statement-making sunglasses, much like Jackie’s street style of the ’70s.

Melania gave a nod to her predecessor, and past first ladies, by wearing head-to-toe black Dolce Gabbana lace gown to meet the Pope, which she paired with a traditional mantilla, or lace veil.

Melania seemed to look to Jackie’s riding attire for her solo trip to Africa last fall, imitating her loose-fitted riding pants, a white button down shirt and tall brown boots.

Kennedy was known to embrace the 60s’ and 70s’ trend of big bulky belts, a style that the current first lady replicated a few times during her trip to the Middle East. With her long black jumpsuit and chunky gold belts, Trump could have very easily stepped right out of the 1970s.

Kennedy, who was urged to visit India to help strengthen relationships between the two countries, opted for a baby blue silk dress with pearls and gloves for one of her visits with the prime minister. Trump’s Ralph Lauren look at Trump’s inauguration has been likened to Kennedy’s poised look.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee told ABC News, “This whole event is a monument to his insecurity. And I think it’s very unfortunate that a nation that prides itself on democracy and unifying messages has to be exposed to his insecurity that he’s trying to cover up with tanks, and it just doesn’t work.”

According to a report from Politico, the administration had stressed out over RSVPs. “They started this too late and everyone has plans already,” Republican donor Dan Eberhart told the website. “Everyone will be there in spirit, but in reality, people planned their July 4th activities weeks ago.”

“They are creating this thing from scratch, and I do not know if anyone knows how it will go off,” a White House aide told Politico. “There are questions about the ticket distribution and who will show up. The weather might be bad. Heads are spinning.”

The president’s children were not present on Thursday — Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner celebrated in the Hamptons in Long Island, N.Y., along with Donald Trump Jr., and Kimberly Guilfoyle, who recently purchased a $4.4M home in the posh area.
