Since he announced he’d be running for president in 2015, women have been justifiably terrified by Donald Trump’s stance on reproductive rights, and now that he’s days away from getting sworn in, Planned Parenthood is seeing a very real response to the idea that access to birth control might be regulated.
The organization’s president, Cecile Richards, appeared on Christiane Amanpour’s CNN International program Monday, where she revealed that women have been coming in droves for vital services for fear that access might vanish. Specifically, requests for IUDs have skyrocketed.
“We’ve had a 900 percent increase in women trying to get into Planned Parenthood to get an IUD because they’re desperately concerned that they might lose their access to health care,”Richards said. “They know that [PP] is the place that can provide it.”
As for why there’s been an interest in IUDs specifically: The contraceptive lasts an average of eight to 10 years, depending on the type you choose. Translation: Get one now while you’re still covered, and it’ll have the potential to ensure protection though two Donald Trump terms regardless of the women’s health policies he and his supporters institute.
Richards described the dramatic increase not only in terms of women seeking to ensure their personal health, but as the first line of resistance to what’s ahead. “Women in this country are absolutely not going without a fight,” she said.
Planned Parenthood is currently a hot topic for the GOP, which is gunning to strip the organization of funding for the vital services used by 2.5 million people every year, according to reports. If they succeed, Planned Parenthood stands to lose over 40 percent of its government funding, a blow that will leave thousands of woman without access to basic healthcare.
It’s scary stuff, and it’s not a bad idea to get your IUD—or any other birth control method of choice—wile you can if you rely on Planned Parenthood.
