Legislation to bar almost anyone under 18 from using a tanning salon in Rhode Island is heading for a vote in the state Senate.
A Senate panel endorsed the proposed on Wednesday. If the measure becomes law Rhode Island would have some of the nation’s strictest rules on teen tanning.
The proposal would only allow minors to use tanning salons if they have a prescription from a physician.
Many states require parental consent for minors to use tanning salons. Rhode Island now requires a parent to accompany minors using a tanning salon.
Last year California became the first state to prohibit minors from using tanning salons with or without parental permission.
The bill is scheduled for a Senate vote on Wednesday.
