Providence mayor names economic development chief

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras has named Rhode Island businessman James Bennett as the city’s new director of economic development after a months-long national search.

Bennett served as chairman of the Rhode Island Convention Center from 1995 to 2001 and was named to the post again in January by Gov. Lincoln Chafee. He is also the founder and president of Madison Components LLC, a company that distributes electronic and network hardware.

Bennett ran for governor in 2002 and lost to former Gov. Donald Carcieri.

Bennett will oversee the city’s economic development initiatives, including efforts to attract and retain businesses and jobs. His annual salary will be $150,000.

Taveras made the announcement Monday.
