A Rhode Island state lawmaker has been expelled from the House Republican caucus after party leaders said he made derogatory online comments about other Republican representatives.
The Providence Journal reported Wednesday that the 10-member House Republican bloc voted to kick out Rep. Daniel Gordon of Portsmouth on Tuesday afternoon.
The vote came after House Minority Leader Brian Newberry wrote to Gordon last week warning that his online comments were out of line. Republican officials did not immediately respond to a request for details on the offending comments.
The expulsion means that Gordon may no longer use the staff and resources in the House Republican office.
Calls to Gordon’s home were not immediately returned Wednesday.
Gordon was elected to the House last year. He is a self-employed construction contractor.
