RI lawmaker pushes to protect servers' tips

A Rhode Island lawmaker has written legislation to prohibit restaurant bosses from demanding a portion of their servers’ tips.

Rep. Christopher Blazejewski said Monday that his bill is designed to ensure servers receive the full benefit of their customers’ tips. Blazejewski’s bill would still allow servers to share their tips with other service employees like bartenders or those who bus tables.

Blazejewski, a Providence Democrat, notes that many servers work for less than minimum wage and says it’s unfair for their employers to demand a cut of their tips, a practice he refers to as “tip theft.”

He says he wrote the bill after hearing from a number of constituents who work in restaurants.
