Rhode Island lawmakers are starting the new year with a new legislative session.
The General Assembly will return to the State House Tuesday for the first day of a session expected to last through the spring.
Tuesday’s work is largely ceremonial, with votes on House speaker and Senate president and oaths of office for lawmakers.
Legislative leaders say the year’s top issue is the state’s beleaguered economy. House Speaker Gordon Fox says he also wants to call an early vote in the House on the question of gay marriage.
The session begins at 2 p.m.
