A Rhode Island lawmaker says allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses would bring “terrorists” to the state.
Rep. Peter Palumbo told WPRO-AM on Thursday that giving licenses to illegal immigrants is a “major national security issue” and would “invite terrorists from all over the world” to Rhode Island. Gov. Lincoln Chafee said this week he is studying the issue.
The Cranston Democrat says he is considering legislation to challenge the decision by a state school board to allow in-state tuition to illegal immigrants.
He said he wants to do away with the Board of Governors for Higher Education, which on Monday approved resident tuition rates for the children of illegal immigrants. The General Assembly has not acted on the issue.
