RI Senate passes resolution opposing Mass. LNG

The Rhode Island Senate has unanimously passed a resolution opposing a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal just across the border in Fall River, Mass.

The project proposed by Weaver’s Cove Energy LLC would require LNG tankers to travel through Rhode Island waters in Narragansett and Mount Hope bays to get to the planned offshore terminal in Fall River.

The resolution, passed Wednesday,.will be sent to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. It recommends that any approval by federal regulators for the project also require Weaver’s Cove Energy to get an OK from the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council.

Residents and officials in Massachusetts and Rhode Island have opposed the terminal, saying it poses unacceptable risks. Weaver’s Cove says it is needed to meet rising regional energy demands
