Farmers throughout Rhode Island who suffered damage from tropical storm Irene are now eligible for federal assistance.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture approved a disaster declaration Wednesday for all five of the state’s counties. Aid was already available to farmers in Bristol, Newport and Providence counties.
The decision means that farmers whose crops, livestock or equipment were damaged by Irene may apply to the USDA for emergency loans and other types of assistance.
The decision was announced by the USDA in a letter to Gov. Lincoln Chafee dated Wednesday and obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday.
