Smithfield state Sen. John Tassoni Jr. says he won’t seek a seventh term next year because he wants to spend more time with his family and concentrate on his businesses.
The 52-year-old lawmaker has represented Smithfield and North Smithfield in District 22 for the past decade. His decision to not seek re-election was first reported Wednesday night by the website GoLocalProv.com.
Tassoni wrote more than 100 bills that became law and successfully sponsored legislation against bullying in schools and on the Internet. He is chairman of the Senate Committee on Housing and Municipal Government, which is reviewing how state emergency
management officials responded to Tropical Storm Irene.
