Whitehouse visits troops, officials in Afghanistan

U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has returned from a trip to Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he visited troops from Rhode Island and met with foreign leaders.

The Rhode Island Democrat was joined on the week-long trip by three other senators. He first stopped in Pakistan, where he met with leaders to discuss efforts to root out terrorist networks based in that country. In Afghanistan he met with troops and met with U.S. military commanders and U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker.

Whitehouse says the security situation in Afghanistan is “steadily improving” but that he’ll keep pushing a sustained reduction in U.S. forces there.

Whitehouse returned to Rhode Island on Tuesday. The trip was Whitehouse’s fourth visit to Pakistan and his fifth to Afghanistan.
