Parties and host cities, of course, disagree, believing that a big convention brings an economic boost to the city and perhaps some local votes for the party. The latter has not necessarily translated to victory in recent election cycles: Democrats did not win North Carolina in 2012, despite having located their convention in Charlotte, while Republicans failed to take Florida in 2012 (host city, Tampa) or Minnesota in 2008 (host city, St. Paul).
