YouthBuild Providence to receive $1.1 million in funding

A job training program that helps prepare at-risk young people for jobs in the construction and clean energy industries has received $1.1 million in federal funds.

Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Reps. Jim Langevin and David Cicilline on Tuesday announced that YouthBuild Providence had received the money from the U.S. Department of Labor.

The 10-month program combines academics with workforce training, and has graduated about 90 students in the past three years. About a third went on to higher education, a third went into constructions jobs and a third went into other careers.

Reed says the money will help the program provide opportunities for more young people and build a stronger workforce for Rhode Island.
