Zambarano begins prison term in corruption case

Former North Providence Town Council member John Zambarano has checked into a federal prison in Virginia to begin serving a 71-month prison term for his role in a bribery and extortion scandal.

Zambarano was one of three council members to admit they conspired to solicit bribes from local businessmen in exchange for favorable votes on zoning and licensing changes.

Another of the three, Joseph Burchfield, began serving his sentence earlier this week in Maryland.

Raymond Douglas III is expected to report to prison later this month.
