WASHINGTON, DC – At his weekly press briefing today, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) blasted President Obama for not only failing to address the border crisis for which he is responsible, but for threatening more unilateral actions that will make matters worse. Following are Boehner’s remarks:
“Republicans are committed to addressing the humanitarian crisis on the border in a responsible way.
“The first bill on the floor helps secure our border and speeds the return of unaccompanied children back to their home countries.
“The president and the White House have abandoned all pretense of governing. They once called… changing the 2008 law a ‘bipartisan priority.’ Now they oppose it and call it ‘partisan.’
“Instead of addressing the crisis at hand, Senate Democrats are talking up some nutso scheme to jam through the Senate immigration bill, even though they know it will never happen. And I’ll say it one more time: the House will not take up the Senate immigration reform bill or accept it back from the Senate in any fashion, including in this border bill. Nor will we accept any attempt to add other immigration reform issues, or anything like it, including the DREAM Act, to the House’s border bill.
“Any attempt to exploit this crisis – and these kids – by adding such measures is going to run into a brick wall here in the People’s House.
“The crisis on the border is one of the president’s own making. But he still hasn’t learned his lesson. Now he’s threatened to re-write the law and take more unilateral action on immigration in the coming months.
“Let me just be clear: such action would create an even greater incentive for more illegal crossings and make the crisis at our border even worse. That would be a grave mistake.
“The second bill we’ll vote on today will make clear the House’s position: no more unilateral action by the president.
“We’re a nation of laws. The president takes an oath of office in which he gives his word that he will faithfully execute those laws. And if the president takes these actions, he’ll be sealing the deal on his legacy of lawlessness. He’ll be violating the solemn oath he made to the American people on the day of his inauguration. And he’ll be sacrificing the integrity of our laws on the altar of political opportunism. And I can guarantee you, the American people will hold him accountable.
“So let’s be honest, the actions he’s threatening to take are not about policy; they’re about politics. The president’s support is slipping, and he and his party are desperate to motivate their base as we move toward the November elections.
“We have many challenges facing our country, and those challenges need to be addressed through strong leadership. Every time the president rewrites a law unilaterally and declines to enforce the laws of our nation as they’re written, it conveys not strength, but weakness. And it makes it harder to build the trust with the American people to get things done that really do need to get done.”
