Boehner Names David Stewart as New Policy Director

WASHINGTON, DC – House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today named David Stewart to serve as Policy Director for the Office of the Speaker.  Currently Boehner’s top economic policy adviser, Stewart will succeed Brett Loper, whose departure was announced yesterday.

I’ve had the privilege of working with David Stewart for nearly five years, and like his peers and members of Congress from both parties, I have great respect for his counsel and his expertise,” Speaker Boehner said.  “He is a dedicated professional who brings to his new role a wealth of experience dealing with the big challenges facing our country, from trade and pension issues to tax and entitlement reform.  David is already a critical member of my team, and I’m pleased he has agreed to serve as our new policy director.”

David Stewart has been Speaker Boehner’s top economic policy adviser since 2008, focusing primarily on taxation, international trade, financial services, public finance, social entitlements, and pension issues.

Last year, he took a leave of absence from the Office of the Speaker to serve as Economic Policy Director to Governor Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign in Boston.  In this capacity he led the economic policy staff in developing policy positions and advising Governor Romney on economic developments.  During his service as Economic Policy Director, Stewart was selected to serve as Policy Director to the vice presidential nominee, Chairman Paul Ryan.  He traveled daily with the vice presidential nominee, advising on a range of policy areas.

Previously, Stewart served as the chief policy advisor to Representative Philip S. English who represented Pennsylvania’s 3rd congressional district from 1995-2008.  During his nine-year tenure with Rep. English, Stewart focused on legislative issues before the House Committee on Ways and Means.

Stewart graduated with honors from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree
