The Hill: “McKeon: Obama should negotiate”
House Armed Service Committee Chairman Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) pushed President Obama to negotiate on the federal government shutdown in the Republican weekly address on Saturday.  ‘The House has passed more than a dozen bills providing funding for things we can all agree on,’ McKeon said. ‘Veterans, cancer research, National Guard, national parks, Head Start, food safety, flight safety, border security, nuclear weapon security, and more.  President Obama and Senate Democrats should back these bills immediately.   Then the president should work with us on plans to reopen the entire government and make sure we do not default on our debts.’”

ABC News Radio: “Taking Steps to Reopen the Government
“In this week’s Republican address, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon, R-Calif., says that for all the apparent disagreement in Washington, there are some things on which lawmakers and President Obama can agree.  Noting the passage and signing of legislation this week that will guarantee death benefits for the families of fallen soldiers, Rep. McKeon encourages the president and the Senate to forward on other items on which they all agree, including veterans, cancer research, National Guard, national parks, Head Starts, food safety, border security and nuclear weapon security.”

Reuters: “California Republican Representative Buck McKeon, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said in the Republican weekly address that his party is standing on some important principles. ‘It’s about stemming the tide of debt and deficits that threatens to wash out an entire generation’s opportunities,’ he said.”

CNN: “The Republican Party’s weekly address didn’t say a single negative thing Saturday about President Barack Obama or the Democratic Party. Not on.   Rather, Rep. Buck McKeon, R-California, struck a positive tone that focused on all the work that remains to be done, by everyone.  ‘For all the focus on disagreements in Washington, we’ve actually found some common ground this week,’ McKeon said in the address, speaking of Obama’s signing of legislation guaranteeing death benefits for the families of fallen American service members, as well as a bill guaranteeing pay for the military.  ‘We shouldn’t stop there,’ the Armed Services Committee chairman said.  He went on to speak of the piecemeal funding bills passed by the Republican-majority House of Representatives but rejected by the Democrat-controlled Senate.”

UPI: “House Republican Armed Forces chair urges Obama to negotiate”
President Obama should negotiate with Republicans to ‘make sure we do not default on our debts,’ the head of the House Armed Services Committee said Saturday.  Noting the House had passed more than a dozen bills to fund ‘things we can all agree on,’ Rep. Buck McKeon, R-Calif., urged Obama and Senate Democrats to ‘back these bills immediately.’  Then the president should work with us on plans to reopen the entire government and make sure we do not default on our debts,” said McKeon, delivering the GOP’s weekly media address.  McKeon voiced optimism about a meeting he and other House Republicans had with Obama at the White House Thursday.”
