London — Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a high-level congressional delegation met today with top U.S. military commanders at the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and U.S. European Command (EUCOM) in Stuttgart, Germany. Speaker Pelosi released the following statement:
“On our visit to Stuttgart, our delegation was privileged to extend our thanks to the men and women in uniform serving in critical U.S. military combatant commands operating on the continents of Africa and Europe.
“At AFRICOM, our delegation was briefed on critical security issues and received timely updates on developing situations in Libya, Sudan, and Somalia. We discussed the importance of American leadership and partnering with allies to promote opportunity, good governance and stability across Africa in the face of formidable threats. Humanitarian response efforts and the impact of climate crisis on stability and conflict across the continent were also reviewed.
“Our EUCOM briefing offered vital information for Members on the status of U.S. efforts to strengthen the NATO common defense mission and counter Russian aggression. We discussed critical issues related to readiness and resource allocation, and emphasized the need to maintain our alliances to provide a strong deterrent.
“Our first responsibility is to keep the American people safe, and we salute our men and women in uniform and military families whose service honors that responsibility.”
