Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today marking the 71th anniversary of Israel’s Independence Day, Yom Ha’atzmaut:

“This evening, we pause to celebrate one of the greatest political achievements of the 20th century – the creation of the State of Israel.  For 71 years, through continued struggles and hard-won successes, the people of Israel have thrived, building a nation on the cutting edge of art, science, technology and engineering and dedicated to realizing its founding values of freedom, justice and peace as spelled out in the country’s Declaration of Independence.

“Sadly, this anniversary has been marred by this past weekend’s heartbreaking, deadly barrage of rockets from Gaza, which killed four innocent souls and injured hundreds more.  Americans mourn for all the innocent victims, their families and those wounded in this senseless violence.  Israel has a right to defend itself against all attacks.  We welcome the ceasefire and are hopeful that it will hold and ensure the safety and well-being of both Israelis and Palestinian civilians.  All those who pray for a peaceful future for Israelis, Palestinians and the entire region must rededicate their efforts to end the bloodshed and recommit to a future vision for a two-state solution with two peoples living side-by-side in peace and security.

“This Israeli Independence Day, we reaffirm our commitment to the unbreakable bonds of friendship and partnership between the United States and Israel.  This enduring relationship is as old as the nation itself, beginning when President Truman recognized the new state mere minutes after independence was declared.  Led by our shared history and common interests of security, stability and a just and lasting peace, we will continue our work to build a future free from hostility and fear for all who call Israel home.”
