Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day:

“On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we mark one of the darkest chapters in human history.  Less than a century ago, the world witnessed the systematic extermination of six million Jews and millions more who were killed simply because of who they were and what they believed.  The memory of this unfathomable horror continues to stand as a lasting reminder to heed the lessons of the past and honor our responsibility to never forget or stand idly by while others suffer.

“Today, the world continues to be confronted by the relentless scourge of bigotry, nationalism and anti-Semitism.  In the face of these pernicious threats, we cannot remain silent.  As a nation founded on the values of freedom, equality and justice, we can never allow genocide, racism, xenophobia or any form of hatred or discrimination to threaten anyone, anywhere in the world.

“As we mark this solemn anniversary, all peace-loving people must continue to stand opposed to the devastation that malicious lies, toxic stereotypes and unchallenged scapegoating still inflict on our communities and the world.  As the last living survivors of the Holocaust share their experiences and testimony, we draw strength from their lifelong mission to bear witness, and we rededicate ourselves to our sacred duty to pass on their stories to our children and grandchildren.  To honor the memory of all those silenced forever, we will never waver from this vital work or retreat from our commitment to build a future of peace, hope and freedom for all.”
