Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement following the passing of long-time New York Times journalist, Robert Pear:
“Robert Pear was a titan of American journalism whose four decades of authoritative reporting and tenacious pursuit of the truth made him an outstanding force for the public good.
“Robert’s work was marked by extraordinary diligence, integrity and care. He turned his unflinching gaze on many of the most important challenges facing our nation, from health care to the fight against poverty, and commanded the respect of all for his fairness and formidable expertise. His unique and powerful ability to communicate complex legislation and policies to the public was a shining example of the power of the press to inform the public, strengthen our democracy and move our nation forward.
“Robert Pear’s thoughtful, thorough and tough reporting honored the highest ideals of journalism and our democracy. He illuminated his readers, held policymakers and legislators accountable, and leaves an enduring legacy for all those who follow in his footsteps. May it be a comfort to his colleagues and loved ones that so many grieve with and pray for them at this sad time.”
