Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the Department of Justice filed its brief in Texas v. United States, asking the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals to strike down the entirety of the Affordable Care Act. The House has voted on three occasions to oppose the suit, while House Republicans have voted overwhelmingly in support of the Trump Administration’s assault on health care.
“Two years ago this weekend, House Republicans gathered in the Rose Garden to congratulate themselves for voting to gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions and take away millions of families’ health care. Today, the Trump Administration is continuing Republicans’ monstrous campaign to destroy pre-existing condition protections and Americans’ access to affordable health care.
“There is no viable legal argument and no moral defense for the devastation the Trump Administration is asking the court to inflict on Americans’ health care. The Trump Administration owes the American people answers for why it is seeking to rip away protections for pre-existing conditions and cause such vast suffering for families across America. If the GOP gets their way in court, Americans would lose the life-saving guarantee of essential health benefits, the ban on lifetime and annual limits on care, the ban on treating being a woman as a pre-existing condition, young adults’ ability to remain on a parent’s coverage until age 26, the Medicaid expansion and critical affordability subsidies. Seniors and working families would suddenly see their health costs soar.
“While Congressional Republicans have consistently voted to gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions, next week the Democratic House will vote on the Protecting Americans with Pre-existing Conditions Act to strengthen and reinforce these life-saving protections. In the courts and in the Congress, the Democratic House Majority will fight relentlessly to defend Americans’ health care and to lower health costs and prescription drug prices for all Americans.”
