WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS), a mother of two college students and the Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference, will urge Senate Democrats to pass bipartisan student loan reform when she delivers the Weekly Republican Address on Saturday, July 6. Because of Democrats’ inaction, the interest rate on many student loans doubled on July 1. The House acted in May to stop this rate hike and implement long-term reform that helps students and their families.
“It’s stunning that President Obama and Senate Democrats let student loan interest rates double on their watch, but they still have a chance to do the right thing,” House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said. “Republicans have done our part and passed a bill that mirrors the president’s plan to stop an immediate interest rate hike and make college more affordable. We need the president to lead and settle his differences with Senate Democrats so we can end this uncertainty.”
“As a mom with two kids in college, I am well aware of the rising costs associated with higher education, and it is disheartening that the president and Senate Democrats would rather make pawns of young people than come together on a solution,” Rep. Jenkins said. “It is our responsibility to protect future generations, and ensure they have the same—if not better—opportunities that we had.”
